BOX OF CHOCOLATES

[indietronica duo]

BOX OF CHOCOLATES is an unlikely indietronica duo from Berlin.

Singer Effi Ciency and guitarist Loupoe are so different, they would never have met in life without a clear kick from fate. No wonder, their music thrives on contrast and contradictions. Red-hot meets ice-cold, bittersweet turns sour-spicy, brainwave joins gut feeling.

The results are everything but repetitive: like a box of chocolates, each of their handmade songs serves a different flavor.

Eff's soprano voice can go low and high, soft and hard and everything in between. Her lyrics describe the confusion of human interactions, from mundane to extreme.

Loupoe's earthy riffs provide the basis for Eff's airy melodies, and ⎼ whether blues, rock or jazz ⎼ he’s simply a really good guitar player.

Since their formation in 2016, Box of Chocolates have released four albums and two EPs that demonstrate the duo's range:

  • The LP LIMINAL races across all shades of indie, from rich alternative and hard cross-over, to blues and folk, to electronic and trip hop.

  • The EP 2NESS ventures into the drum & bass jungle and invents a new genre on the fly: Liquid Prog Choc.

  • On SACRILEGE!, Box of Chocolates tackles works from the Renaissance and Baroque periods to give the 400-year-old pieces a contemporary energy boost!

  • The delicate and mostly acoustic songs on the album UNBLIND deal with overcoming our personal blind spots in life.

  • The cover album SOUNDS LIKE A CHILDHOOD indulges in 80s nostalgia with synth sounds and lots of guitar, presenting iconic smash hits in new flavors.

The duo is currently in the process of bringing WHEEL OF LOVE, an indietronic short opera, to the stage.

Effi Ciency

[singer, composer, lyricist]

Effi Ciency is Box of Chocolates’ singer, composer and lyricist.

A classical soprano by training, she has acquired a broad range of vocal color, tone and expression. Her voice, that can sound both clear and strong as well as gentle and intimate, has been compared to such diverse artists as Kate Bush, PJ Harvey and Heather Nova. In her songs, she often combines different singing techniques like powerful belting or operatic singing.

Her lyrics are influenced by Eddie Vedder's emotional authenticity, Nick Cave's strangeness as well as Sven Regener's poetic precision. Topics of her songs evolve around questions of human relatedness in all its mundane and extreme forms.

Loupoe

[guitarist, composer, producer, sound engineer]

Loupoe is Box of Chocolates’ guitarist, composer and producer.

He picked up his first electric guitar at the age of 13 (and hasn't put it down since). He effortlessly covers a wide range of genres and styles: Hard rock, powerful cross-over and classic blues, sophisticated jazz interpretations, handmade folk or excursions into electronic music. You name it, he can do it.

Numerous album releases with various band projects and four solo albums testify to his ingenuity as a composer and producer.

Behind the stage name Loupoe is the award-winning sound engineer Stefan Noltemeyer who has also recorded, mixed and mastered all Box of Chocolates albums (human-mastering.com).
